Millions of moves are executed in the U.S. every year. Moving apartments is an exciting but often dreaded job due to all the planning and preparation involved. Planning and staying organized is usually the key to a seamless and hassle-free apartment move, especially when shifting apartments for the first time. The process can quickly become daunting and exhausting, from preparing a moving checklist and sourcing essential packing supplies to packing and moving all the belongings unharmed to the new apartment.

Dress comfortably, wear non-slip shoes on a moving day, and start as early as possible.

Fortunately, some simple tips and tricks can make moving into an apartment as easy and smooth as possible. Here is a simple apartment moving guide to avoid common moving mistakes and streamline the whole process:

Visit and assess the new space

If possible, visit the new apartment before moving to understand the layout, building’s access points, number of elevators, and other necessary information that can impact the move. Assessing the new place beforehand eases the moving process and helps with planning, preparing, and figuring out what matters.

Prepare a to-do list

A moving checklist can come in handy and make the process more organized. Prepare a list of all the major tasks that need handling before the moving day. It will prevent unnecessary panic and chaos. There is much more involved in the moving process than many think. Staying realistic and having a detailed list will help keep track of everything and ensure a smooth move.

Declutter

Moving an apartment is the perfect time to declutter and eliminate things that are not needed or won’t fit into the new space. This will ensure that only necessary things make it to the new apartment. Consider donating, selling, or throwing away based on the condition and usability of the belongings.

Arrange sufficient packing supplies

Ensuring enough supplies for the moving day will save time. Arrange for moving boxes, packing paper, packing tape, permanent markers, bubble wrap, moving blankets, stretch tape, utility knives, furniture pads, and mattress covers. Alternatively, plastic totes or boxes are also an excellent option for moving belongings from one apartment to another. Pack everything properly to prevent any damage.

Prepare a moving day bag

Please keep all the items required immediately after moving, like toiletries, chargers, a pair of clothes, and some cleaning supplies, in a separate bag and keep it in the car. Do not forget to protect the valuables like jewelry and documents, and keep them close at hand in the car.

Start early

Dress comfortably, wear non-slip shoes on a moving day, and start as early as possible. Packing and moving can take more time than imagined.

Other useful tips

  • Update the new address wherever necessary.
  • Call all the service providers, like cable, internet, trash, and electricity, to schedule cancellation at the current address.
  • Take extra care while packing breakables and other valuable items.
  • Pack a room at a time and label all boxes properly.
  • Get parking permission.
  • Clean the mess created during the moving process.

Move with ease

Moving apartments is challenging. If you are feeling overwhelmed, hire a local moving company for assistance. Professional movers have years of experience, the right equipment, and the know-how to execute a successful move.

At Goat On A Tote, we offer moving tote rental, including delivery and pickup of empty totes, for residential and commercial customers in the Phoenix Valley area. Our environmentally-friendly totes are made of strong, quality material. We deliver the totes to a business or home ready to use, then remove them once they’re unpacked from the new location. Although we do not pack the contents of the totes, we save the homeowner from being forced to purchase totes for a single use.
